Went back to Linux Mint today.
Given yesterdays experience with pclos, I thought I better update and upgrade it before I do anything else.
The only way I could find to get it updated (after changing the main Ubuntu repos in /etc/apt/sources.list to Hardy rather than Gutsy) was to type
sudo apt upgrade
(yes, upgrade not update)
This took about an hour and apparently more than 700 packages were installed.
