This wasn't difficult to install.
The steps were:
1. Download Avant Window Navigator 0.2.1 from here, move to / and untar with
tar -zxvf avant-window-navigator-0.2.1-i686-1as.tgz
2. Download gnome-desktop-2.22.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm and use alien to convert to a .tgz file with
# alien gnome-desktop-2.22.3-1.fc9.i386.rpm -t
Move the resulting gnome-desktop-2.22.3.tgz to / and untar with
tar -zxvf gnome-desktop-2.22.3.tgz
Actually, this is available from the repos, so there is no need to download and convert the rpm.
3. Install gnome-python-desktop from the repos
Now AWN should work.
However, it seems that in Zenwalk you cannot drag and drop apps to the AWN dock. You need, instead, to write a launcher for each desired app.
Also, as of now, I've been unable to get any awn-extras-applets for the dock.
Additionally, it seems the slacky repo that I used to get awn 2.1 also has version 2.6. I really don't know how I missed that.
