Yes, I finally got it working although this was almost entirely due to the guy moonbeam providing a revised patch. For details check the thread in the awn forum.
Problem is that not everything works. In particular, awn-manager (preferences) don't work although I have made just a little progress here tonight. Again, everything is revealed in the forum thread.
Nevertheless, AWN is available now in FreeBSD on my Dell -- so that's nice.
