Finally I have sound in FreeBSD 7.0 using OSS.
I got an awful lot of help from the 4Front Technology User Forums who are guys who maintain OSS. However, not everything is working right yet as I still can't get a music CD to play and last.fm won't play as it complains of all the sound devices being busy.
However, Amarok plays perfectly and I can get last.fm through Amarok.
Nevertheless, there is enough hints I got from that forum (really just one guy) that there are still many opportunities to explore further to get everything working.
