Well, in truth, it wasn't really a webcam problem but when I re-installed Cheese after upgrading to Jaunty (Ubuntu), it complained that no camera was detected. How strange.
However, it turns out that upgrading to Jaunty, for some unknown reason, lead to the webcam being disabled in BIOS.
So, I tapped F2 while booting to get me to the BIOS configuration pages and therein I re-enabled the webcam.
And, now all is well.
