My iPhone4 shows, in the upper right hand corner, not only an icon with a rough indication of how full or empty the battery is, but additionally you can go to Settings > General > Usage and tap on the Battery Percentage.
Thereafter, the exact state of your battery is displayed alongside the battery icon.
However, although the battery icon is present, this feature is not available on my iPhone Touch 3G or even the newer iPod Touch 4.
You can get a reasonable idea of how your battery is doing when you hook up your iPod to your computer via the charging cable. A full screen image of the battery should appear showing roughly how complete the current charge is.
However, this may not be possible when you're out and about which is precisely when you're most likely to want to keep a close eye on your battery status.
Although there are apps to show you battery status when run, you can actually find out this information without installing anything.
Instead, go to Settings > General > Accessibility > Triple-click Home and then select Toggle VoiceOver. Next go to the Home screen and triple click the Home button and VoiceOver should activate.
Now touch the battery icon in the upper right hand corner whereupon the correct battery percentage will be announced by VoiceOver.
To turn off VoiceOver, triple click the Home button again.
