I had this problem in FreeBSD and now I'm finding it too in ArchLinux.
This is where I try to open something like kwrite or kedit in a terminal and I see
kwrite: cannot connect to x-server
The way around this is to copy the .Xauthority file from your home directory to the /root folder. So, just typing this (for me) eliminates this problem.
# cp /home/paul/.Xauthority /root
