Today, when I tried to play Last.Fm in Ubuntu, I got a message saying something like the "sound device is busy".
Then I tried Amarok and got a very similar message "Audio output unavailable. Device is busy".
Looking through some solutions on Google, it seems that if OSS is running then it disables Alsa. But why OSS was running I have no idea. However, I had been messing around with sme other systems like Senryu and eyeOS.
Anyway, I went to System>Preferences>Sound>Devices (tab) and changed everything from Autodetect to Alsa.
After a reboot (but not before), sound worked again in Amarok and Last.Fm
